Andrew Lloyd, the perpetrator who m*rdered his girlfriend’s 13-month-old son Aaron Gilbert after four weeks of ab*se in 2005, was found d*ad in prison in 2020 while serving a life sentence. Lloyd’s brutal acts included yelling at the child, picking him up by his ears, throwing bottles at him, and blowing cannabis smoke in his face.
The Prison Service confirmed his d*ath on November 19 2020 at HMP Full Sutton, where Lloyd was serving his sentence at the age of 37. The spokeswoman stated, “The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”
During the trial, a Swansea Crown Court jury heard that Lloyd viciously attacked Aaron when left alone with him on May 5, 2005. Lloyd lost his temper, shaking Aaron violently, leading to the baby’s head colliding with a wall. The sustained four-week catalogue of brutality ultimately resulted in the tragic d*ath of 13-month-old Aaron Gilbert.
Aaron’s mother, Rebecca Lewis, was found guilty of failing to protect her son from Lloyd’s violent and drug-taking behavior. She was sentenced to seven years in prison for familial hom*cide. Lloyd’s d*ath in custody marks the conclusion of a disturbing and tragic case that shocked the community.
Following Aaron’s d*ath in the hospital the next day, a pathologist discovered a severe brain injury and nearly 50 external injuries. Andrew Lloyd, then 23, was sentenced in December 2006 at Swansea Crown Court alongside Aaron’s mother, 21-year-old Rebecca Lewis. Lloyd received a minimum of 24 years in prison, and Lewis was sentenced to seven years for familial hom*cide and attempting to pervert the course of justice, a landmark charge at the time.
The court heard that the ab*sive relationship between Lewis and Lloyd started in March 2005. After moving in together, Lloyd developed a hatred for baby Aaron. The jury learned of Lloyd’s appalling actions, including yelling at Aaron, picking him up by his ears, throwing bottles at him, swinging him by his ankles, attempting to smother him with a blanket, blowing cannabis smoke in his face, and biting him hard on the cheek five days before Aaron’s d*ath. Aaron’s appearance became so disfigured due to systematic and violent as*aults that a neighbor likened it to that of the Elephant Man.
During sentencing, Mr. Justice Langstaff remarked, “You m*rdered Aaron after subjecting him to a sustained catalogue of brutality during the last four weeks of his life. I regard your conduct during those four weeks as being effectively inseparable from what you did on the day when you inflicted the fatal injury.”
In 2007, Lloyd appealed his minimum jail term of 24 years in London’s Appeal Court, arguing that it didn’t consider his youth and troubled personal background. Lord Justice Gage, however, noted 50 separate injuries on Aaron’s body and emphasized Lloyd’s significant and extreme ab*se. The appeal was rejected, and Lloyd’s sentence remained unchanged.
