Lisa Renée Irwin’s disappearance was reported when it was found out that she went missing from her Kansas City, Missouri, home on October 4, 2011, during the early morning hours.
Lisa’s mother, Deborah Bradley, stated that her father, Jeremy Irwin, noticed Lisa was missing at around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Deborah mentioned that when she checked on Lisa in her bed either at 6:40 p.m. or 10:40 p.m. on Monday night, she was there. However, when Jeremy returned home from work late at night on Tuesday, he found that many lights were on, a window was open, and the front door was unlocked. The family later informed the police that several cell phones were also missing.
During the investigation that followed, two witnesses claimed to have seen a man walking down the street with a baby. The police were able to locate and question a man who matched one witness’s description, but the other witness said that the photo of the man did not match the person they saw.
On October 19, 2011, a search was conducted at the Irwin residence, and court documents revealed that a cadaver dog detected the scent of a deceased body near the mother’s bed, possibly belonging to Lisa. Various items were removed from the house during the execution of the warrant, including a multicolor comforter, purple shorts, a multicolor Disney character shirt, a Glo Worm toy, a blanket with a “Cars” theme, rolls of tape, and a tape dispenser.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Deborah expressed that the police had accused her of being involved in Lisa’s disappearance and repeatedly told her, “You did it. You did it. And we have nothing.” She also claimed that she was accused of failing a lie detector test. In response to these allegations, Deborah and Jeremy announced the following week that they were organizing a reward in the hopes of obtaining new information.
Jeremy Irwin appeared on the Today Show to discuss the situation, emphasizing their continued cooperation with the police and their determination to find Lisa and bring her back home. Deborah also made an appearance on the broadcast.
In October, the Irwin family informed the authorities that an anonymous benefactor had hired a private investigator and offered a $100,000 reward for Lisa’s safe return.
In October 2011, the Irwin family’s attorney, Cyndy Short, stopped representing them due to difficulties working with their other attorney, Joe Tacopina. Lisa’s brothers were supposed to be interviewed and provide DNA samples, but their parents canceled the night before, according to Tacopina. Investigators were allegedly denied access to the boys. However, they were interviewed again in November 2011. Inconsistent stories from those involved may have complicated the early stages of the investigation.
In May 2012, Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin reported fraudulent use of their debit card on a website that offered fake birth certificates. The existence of the website was confirmed by news shows, and their attorney acknowledged visiting it. Police continued their investigation, believing that Lisa Irwin might still be alive.
In October 2013, a girl resembling Lisa was found in Greece, but authorities determined that she wasn’t Lisa Irwin.
The case gained attention in 2016 when it was featured on The Vanished podcast.
On November 24, 2020, the HLN series Real Life Nightmare aired an episode called “Vanished from the Crib,” focusing on Lisa Irwin’s case.
Despite her ex-best friend’s accusations and law enforcement scrutiny, Deborah Bradley has never been formally charged with the disappearance or m*rder of her daughter, Lisa Irwin. The prevailing theory today suggests that baby Lisa was ab*ucted by someone unrelated to her or her family, indicating a possibility that she is still alive.
Shortly after Lisa’s disappearance, two witnesses claimed to have seen a man carrying a baby on the street where she lived. Surveillance footage also captured a man dressed in white leaving a nearby wooded area at 2:30 a.m. However, when investigators found a person matching the witnesses’ descriptions, only one of them identified him as a potential suspect. Further investigation revealed that his alibi was solid, and no other viable suspects had been identified.
Another lead emerged when Lisa’s father, Jeremy Irwin, discovered that three cell phones were missing from their home. He believes that whoever took the phones also took Lisa. Additionally, one of the phones made a mysterious 50-second call around midnight on the night of her disappearance. Both Irwin and Bradley deny making the call.
Investigators determined that the call was made to a Kansas City woman named Megan Wright, although she denied answering the phone. However, Wright was the former girlfriend of a person of interest in the case, a local transient who resided in a nearby halfway house.
“The entire case revolves around the identity of the caller and their motives,” stated Bill Stanton, a private investigator hired by Lisa’s parents, during an interview with Good Morning America. “We strongly believe that the person who possessed that cell phone also had Lisa.” Presently, Lisa Irwin is still officially considered a missing person, and the case remains open and actively investigated. If Lisa is still alive, she would be 12 years old today.
