Colleen Ritzer, a vibrant 24-year-old math teacher at Danvers High School, met a tragic end on October 22, 2013, when one of her students, Philip Chism, brutally murdered her. Colleen, born in Andover, Massachusetts, was a dedicated educator with a passion for teaching mathematics.
Her journey into education began at Hale Middle School in Stow, where she served as a student teacher, earning praise for her dedication. Subsequently, at Gloucester High School, her enthusiasm and creativity as a long-term substitute teacher were highly commended. In 2012, she joined Danvers High School, teaching ninth-grade algebra and geometry, quickly becoming a beloved figure among students and colleagues.
Colleen's life extended beyond the classroom; she was known for her upbeat demeanor, bright smile, and motivational spirit. Engaging with students on social media, providing extra assistance after school, and actively participating in her community showcased her commitment to education.
Tragically, on that fateful day in 2013, Philip Chism, a 14-year-old freshman, followed Colleen into a bathroom after school, attacking her with a box cutter. The motive remains unknown, though evidence suggests Chism may have been upset by something said in class. After the brutal assault, he concealed her body in the woods and used Colleen's credit card to watch a movie.
The subsequent investigation unveiled a gruesome crime scene, leading to Chism's arrest. His trial, marked by claims of insanity and a contentious legal battle, resulted in a guilty verdict for first-degree murder with premeditation and extreme cruelty. Chism received a life sentence with parole possible after 25 years, along with additional sentences for armed robbery.
Colleen's legacy, however, extends beyond this horrific event. Posthumous honors, including the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, recognized her dedication. In 2016, she was inducted into the Andover High School Hall of Honor.
To commemorate her life, Ritzer's family and friends published "Why Her?" – a book exploring her impact, and "The Colleen Ritzer Story" – a documentary sharing personal stories and messages from those who knew and loved her. These endeavors aim to honor Colleen's spirit while highlighting the positive influence she had on the world.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, the memory of Colleen Ritzer endures as a symbol of resilience, strength, and the enduring impact a passionate educator can have on the lives of those they touch.
