History of Ab*se

McVey has openly discussed her experience as a victim of ab*se, even before her kidn*pping. Her drug and alcohol-addicted mother had forced her to move in with and care for her grandmother when she was 14 years old. She had previously been in and out of foster care. “At home, I was se*ually ab*sed. For three years, my grandmother’s boyfriend used to put a gun to my head every time he m0lested me.

It wasn’t anything new for me. What saved my life was a bad situation that led to another bad situation. Because I’m writing my su*cide note the night before [the a*duction], and the next night I’m fighting for my life.”

1984 a*duction

On November 3, 1984, Lisa McVey was a*ducted while riding her bicycle to her grandmother’s home after work. Bobby Joe Long, a serial k*ller and r*pist responsible for at least 10 m*rders and over 50 r*pes, seized her. McVey endured a horrific 26-hour ordeal during which she was blindfolded, held at gunpoint, r*ped, and t0rtured. Fearing for her life, she offered to be Long’s secret girlfriend and claimed to be the only child of an ailing father, eliciting sympathy from her captor.

Using her quick thinking and resourcefulness, McVey persuaded Long to release her. He set her free in a remote location, instructing her to keep her blindfold on for five minutes while he made his escape. After reaching home, she faced further adversity as she was beaten by her guardian’s boyfriend and subjected to a five-hour interrogation about her whereabouts. Despite the ordeal, McVey’s account remained consistent, prompting a call to the police.

During her captivity, McVey deliberately left fingerprints in Long’s bathroom, committed specific details of her ab*uction to memory, and provided a thorough description of her captor, his vehicle, the route they took, and other crucial details. This information enabled the police to track down Long and connect him to other crimes. A surveillance operation was initiated, leading to Long’s arrest on November 16, 1984, for the se*ual as*ault and kidn*pping of McVey.

On September 23, 1985, Long pleaded guilty to his crimes against McVey and pleaded guilty to an additional eight counts of first-degree m*rder, eight counts of kidn*pping, and seven counts of se*ual battery. He received life sentences for each count in Hillsborough County and two d*ath sentences for the m*rders of Michelle Denise Simms and Virginia Johnson.

When Long was ex*cuted on May 23, 2019, both Lisa McVey and another survivor, Linda Nuttall, were present to witness the ex*cution.

Career

In 1995, Lisa McVey embarked on a career with the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation department. During this time, she encountered a break-in at the office, and the responding deputy noticed her potential, suggesting, “You’ve got the attitude to be a cop. Ever thought of that?” Taking this advice to heart, McVey transitioned to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in 1999, initially working as a dispatcher. However, her determination led her to pursue a more active role, prompting her to put herself through the police academy. In 2004, she achieved her goal and was officially deputized.

McVey currently works within the same department that played a pivotal role in finding and arresting her captor. She specializes in combating s*x crimes and dedicates herself to protecting children, drawing on her personal experience to contribute to this crucial work.

In addition to her law enforcement career, McVey serves as a middle school resource officer, leveraging her story to educate students on how to navigate potentially dangerous situations. Her unique perspective and resilience make her an inspirational figure, both within her community and beyond.
