Prisoner Brett Peter Cowan Attacked: Behind Bars Retribution and Vigilante Justice

In 2018, Brett Peter Cowan, the individual convicted of the hom*cide of Daniel Morcombe, endured a stabbing to the neck and ear by another inmate at Wolston jail, as verified by prison authorities. The assault took place in the morning around April 27, 2018. Although Cowan sustained minor injuries, there was no substantial bleeding reported. Following the incident, he was returned to the secure unit. This occurrence is not the first instance of Cowan being targeted by fellow prisoners.

In 2016, Cowan was severely scalded with boiling water by another inmate, resulting in visible burns on his face, chest, back, arms, and legs. The attack was seen as retribution for the m*rder of Daniel Morcombe. The recent st*bbing adds to the history of violence directed at Cowan during his incarceration.

Cowan, received a life sentence and was placed in protective custody after being found guilty of Daniel Morcombe’s m*rder in 2003. The attack with boiling water in 2016 left him visibly scarred, with damaged tattoos and physical changes, including a larger abdomen and thicker arms and legs.

Adam Paul Davidson, poured boiling water over Cowan’s head in 2016, resulting in Cowan’s screams of pain and the formation of blisters on his upper back. Davidson was sentenced to three years in jail for to*ture but was released on parole from Woodford Correctional Centre due to time already served.

The court was informed that Adam Paul Davidson, who was in custody for robbery and fraud offenses at the time, meticulously observed Brett Peter Cowan’s movements for a month, strategizing the most effective way to harm the despised s*x offender.

On the morning, August 5, the incident unfolded as Cowan, engaged in a card game with fellow inmates, briefly went to an exercise yard during a break. There, he encountered Davidson filling a yellow mop bucket next to a hot water urn outside the laundry door. Seizing the opportunity, Davidson requested another inmate to relocate those near his target during the card game. Subsequently, he quietly approached Cowan from behind and poured boiling water over Cowan’s head and body.

The immediate result was intense pain coursing over Cowan’s head and down his right side, prompting screams as he stood up. Facing his attacker, Cowan asked, ‘why, why, why?’ Davidson remained silent, hitting Cowan in the head three or four times with the bucket. As Cowan attempted to escape, Davidson threw the bucket at him.

After the separation of the two, Cowan was sent to his cell for a cold shower, while Davidson was instructed to the kitchen. All other inmates were relocated to the exercise yard. Davidson took full responsibility, declaring, ‘I did it, boss. Only me, no one else was involved. He had it coming. He is a f***ing grub.’

When detectives from the Corrective Services investigation unit arrived at the prison for an unrelated matter, Davidson freely admitted to his actions once again. The father-of-four explained that he was aware of Cowan’s offenses and sought to deliver ‘a little bit of retribution,’ having planned the attack for a month. Davidson expressed his inability to coexist with se*ual predators, leading him to take matters into his own hands.

Adam Paul Davidson, the assailant who attacked Brett Peter Cowan, shared with police that he had been observing Cowan’s movements for a month before carrying out the attack. He admitted to intentionally causing harm but clarified that his intention was not to k*ll Cowan; rather, he wanted him to feel pain similar to what Daniel Morcombe had experienced.

Cowan’s employment in the prison laundry, involving handling Davidson’s clothing, was cited as the tipping point for the attack. Davidson emphasized that he did not want to inflict lethal harm but sought to make Cowan feel the pain akin to Daniel Morcombe’s suffering.

During police questioning, Davidson affirmed that he poured boiling water over the top of Cowan’s head, allowing it to fall down the front of his face and body. He collected the hot water in a mop bucket from the prison laundry, and the act was inspired by witnessing the severe burn injuries on another inmate who had undergone a similar attack.

Davidson expressed his desire for Cowan to bear scars similar to those he had witnessed on his friend, leading to the decision to carry out the “hot watering.” Cowan sustained injuries covering 15 percent of his body.

In October, during Davidson’s sentencing, Judge Ian Dearden emphasized the importance of treating every person respectfully, irrespective of their crimes, and condemned vigilantism. Davidson was sentenced to three years in jail for to*ture but was released on parole due to time already served.

On the eve of his release, Davidson’s mother, Annette Fallbrown, and stepfather, Mark Fallbrown, argued that he should never have been in a position to attack Cowan. They claimed that the incident had made Davidson’s life in jail significantly worse, and he had spent 12 months in lockdown over the as*ault.

Mark Fallbrown asserted that Davidson had serious psychological problems and had expressed discomfort about being near Cowan, but their concerns were allegedly ignored by prison authorities. Cowan, convicted in 2014 for the m*rder of Daniel Morcombe, is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum of 20 years.
