Heartbreaking Murder of Heather Snively

Heartbreaking Murder of Heather Snively

Heather Snively, heavily pregnant, and her fiancée relocated from Maryland to Beaverton, Ohio, just weeks before her due date. Still in need of baby clothes, Heather utilized online platforms like Craigslist to find items for her soon-to-be-named son, John Steven.

Heather encountered Korena on Craigslist, where Korena Roberts had listed baby clothing in the classified ads. Heather reached out to Korena, and the two quickly formed a connection. Korena, who was expecting twins, had more clothing than necessary, prompting her to sell some items on the marketplace.

Heather valued Korena’s friendliness, especially when she extended an invitation to Heather to visit her home and inspect the baby clothing.

In June 2009, eight months pregnant, Heather drove to Korena’s home, shared with her two children and her boyfriend of five years, Yan Shubin. Korena led Heather to her bedroom under the pretense of showing her the clothing. Once inside, Korena brutally attacked Heather with a collapsible baton, delivering over 20 blows to the back of her head, and then forcibly removed a baby boy from her womb.

The newborn was not breathing. Korena concealed Heather’s lifeless body in a carpet, stashing it in a crawlspace. She then took the baby, entered the bathtub, turned on the water, and called her boyfriend, falsely claiming she had given birth.

Confused by the absence of a second baby, Yan inquired about it. Korena asserted that she had not yet delivered the second baby. Concern shifted to the non-breathing infant, prompting Yan to call paramedics.

Despite the urgency, Korena and the baby boy were swiftly taken to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, where John Steven was declared d*ad upon arrival. Initially resistant to a medical examination, Korena eventually acquiesced.

Yan received startling information from doctors: there was no indication of a second baby’s heartbeat, and the examination disclosed that Korena had not recently given birth. Moreover, it was revealed that she had never been pregnant.

Korena, fixated on pregnancy, had not conceived Yan’s two children. Following a miscarriage a few months prior to the as*ault on Heather, Korena became consumed with the desire to provide Yan with a child of his own.

Despite the miscarriage’s emotional toll, Korena continued to feign pregnancy. She bought baby items, informed Yan and other family members of expecting twins, and pretended to attend OB/GYN appointments.

Simultaneously, detectives combed through the Roberts-Shubin residence, discovering Heather’s lifeless body concealed in the crawlspace late into the evening. In addition to blunt force trauma to her head, Heather exhibited cuts on her right breast and abdomen, along with bite marks on her right arm.

A subsequent autopsy disclosed that Heather succumbed to the abdominal cuts and resultant loss of blood.

Facing the consequences of her heinous actions, Korena was apprehended and charged with four counts of m*rder, along with additional charges. Psychological evaluations affirmed her sanity during the incident, ruling out any mental illness and establishing her fitness to stand trial.

Having pleaded guilty to the charges of m*rder, Korena received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. During her sentencing, Chris Popp, Heather’s fiancé and John Steven’s father, addressed Korena, expressing the profound impact of her actions:

“You’ve taken away my fiancée, my son—I don’t know what to say to you,” he declared. “I hope you never forget this.”

Heather’s mother and stepfather, the Kidds, characterized her as a woman whose smile could illuminate a room. In their statement directed at Korena, they conveyed their deep sentiments:

“There is no punishment severe enough for what you did,” their statement asserted. “We hope you’re haunted every day for the rest of your life by what you did.”
