A dad named George Pickering brought a gun to the hospital to make sure doctors didn’t remove life support from his son. While they talked for three hours, his son held his hand tightly.
“Hey, we need the police stat, to the hospital. We have a family member with a gun.”

A person who works at Tomball Regional Medical Center called for help when George Pickering from Pinehurst, Texas got very angry and showed a 9mm handgun while standing beside his son’s hospital bed.
Gary Hammond, who leads criminal investigations at the Tomball police, said that Pickering was very unhappy with the medical care his son, George Pickering III, was getting. George Pickering III was in a very serious condition and on life support after having a stroke. This was reported by the Houston Chronicle back then.
People who saw the situation said that Pickering yelled, “I’ll hurt everyone here,” and pointed the gun at the hospital staff. After he reportedly said, “You don’t think I only have this gun,” a nurse and Pickering’s ex-wife walked away from there.
Even though one of his other sons quickly took away Pickering’s gun at the hospital, he didn’t agree to give up to the police. This made a long situation where SWAT officers stayed in the hospital room, while Pickering held onto his son’s hand the whole time.
After talking to him for a while, they finally convinced him to surrender. Because of what happened, Pickering was taken to jail for two serious charges of attacking with a dangerous weapon.
One of the accusations was dropped, and the other one was made less serious. Also, Pickering got credit for the time he had already spent in jail, according to a report from CNN affiliate KPRC.
His motivation stemmed from his desire to keep his son life.
Pickering said he knew a lot about how the doctors treat his son’s seizures. He also believed that, despite what the hospital said, his son wasn’t really “brain dead.”
“They were acting too quickly – the hospital staff, the nurses, the doctors,” Pickering told KPRC. “I thought that if I had a few hours that night, I could find out if George was really brain dead.”
Pickering said that when he tried to tell them about his worries, they didn’t listen. So, he felt like he had no other choice but to do something very serious – he took out a gun.
“At that time, I was only focused on one thing,” said Pickering. He also admitted that he had been drinking during the incident. “All I wanted was to spend time with George.”
His plan, even though it was really urgent, worked. While Pickering resisted leaving his son’s room despite what the SWAT officers said, he noticed his son squeezing his hand when he asked him to. This made him sure that his son was responsive and not brain-dead like the doctors thought. Because of this, Pickering decided to give up without causing any trouble.
When KPRC asked the people at Tomball Regional Medical Center for a statement, they didn’t want to talk about Pickering’s situation. They said it’s because of privacy rules.
Right now, George Pickering III is healthy and has fully gotten better. This shows that his father’s thinking was right. According to KPRC, the father and son are now very close and do things together. They run a small electrical engineering business and are building their own home.
When the younger Pickering, who looks a lot like his dad, found out about what happened, he felt very touched.
