On the eve preceding September 28, 1966, a young Australian scholar named Allen Redston mysteriously vanished, only to meet a tragic end. This solemn occurrence persists as an enduring riddle, a notorious cold case casting a veil of sorrow over Canberra.
The narrative commences on September 27, 1966, when Allen Redston’s mother entrusted him with a modest errand – to procure ice cream for himself and his sibling from the establishments in the serene Canberra suburb of Curtin. Yet, in an unforeseen turn, young Redston dismissed his brother, choosing instead to seek companionship at a friend’s residence, with the intention of idling away the day at the renowned Curtin Tip. However, after a brief sojourn, he departed the area, disappearing from view until the following day when his lifeless form was discovered.
Authorities unearthed Redston’s lifeless body nestled amidst a thicket of reeds in a creek bed within Curtin. A grim scene unfolded, as he was discovered bound, strangled, and shrouded in a carpet before discreetly being relocated to the very spot of his discovery.
A fervent manhunt ensued, leading investigators to discern descriptions of two plausible suspects: “a fair-haired adolescent aged between 13 and 15” and a young man. Both individuals were last seen in the company of Redston on the fateful day, departing from the locale where the heinous act is believed to have transpired. Remarkably, two boys emerged with chilling accounts of how two men, fitting the aforementioned descriptions, had previously assaulted and attempted to end their lives in a similar manner earlier that year. One of the boys was bound and cast into a lake but miraculously managed to free himself and reach safety. The other was also bound, but thanks to the intervention of his friends, he narrowly escaped. Astonishingly, these distressing incidents had not previously been brought to the attention of law enforcement.
Although no official charges were ever levied, speculations pointed towards Derek Percy, a notorious serial killer, as a potential perpetrator in the untimely demise of Allen Redston. Despite Percy’s assertion of being on vacation in Canberra during the period of the murder, he remained elusive about his involvement. Ultimately, his demise in 2013 consigned any potential answers to the grave.
