Payton Shires, a 24-year-old Ohio social worker, is facing allegations of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy under her care. Disturbing text messages between Shires and the boy were discovered by the boy’s mother, leading to charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
Shires is engaged to Nicholas Rafter, a 27-year-old plumber with a troubled past. Rafter served nearly five years in jail for convictions related to burglary and child endangerment.
He was previously accused of drugging and assaulting a 14-year-old girl when he was 19, facing charges of rape, sexual battery, and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
However, the charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to child endangerment. Rafter was released from prison in August 2017 and placed under intensive supervision parole until July 2022, with ongoing random drug screenings.
Despite Rafter’s criminal history, Shires began dating him three years after his release. Shires, who has publicly expressed support for the death penalty for pedophiles on social media, was charged after admitting to inappropriate behavior during an October 6 phone call with the teen’s mother and Columbus detectives.
The situation escalated when Shires showed up at the boy’s home with a gun, prompting his mother to alert the police. Authorities found Shires with the gun pointed at her head, threatening to kill herself. She faces additional charges of intimidation of a crime victim and intimidation of a crime witness.
Shires, who worked for the National Youth Advocate Program specializing in foster care, has not clarified if she met the boy through her professional role. The 13-year-old boy admitted to engaging in sexual activity with Shires on at least two occasions in September.
Despite the legal troubles, Shires continues to share aspects of her life on social media, including images of her 1-year-old son and her fiancé.
