The Strange Disappearance Of Daylenn Pua: What Happened to Him?

Daylenn Pua, an 18-year-old hiker nicknamed “Moke,” went missing on February 27, 2015, during his hike on the treacherous Haiku Stairs trail in Hawaii. Pua was well-known for his passion for hiking and exploring. The most recent sighting of him occurred as he boarded a bus in Waianae, Oahu.

Daylenn Pua, a native of the Big Island, was on a visit to his grandmother, Martha Bear, in Waianae. During his time there, he shared his aspiration to tackle the renowned Stairway to Heaven trail located on the windward side of Oahu.

However, Bear informed him that the trail was closed and authorities were not permitting anyone to hike the mountain. This information had been widely reported in the news.

Daylenn Pua Disappears

On the morning of February 27, 2015, Daylenn Pua left his grandmother’s house in Waianae, Oahu, and boarded a bus. However, he never returned. According to Martha, Pua had mentioned going for a hike, but she didn’t think he intended to climb the Stairway to Heaven trail because she had already told him it was forbidden. She had also warned him about potential legal consequences if he tried to climb the mountain.

Daylenn Pua shared pictures from the Haiku Stairs trail with his family through messages. The Honolulu police stated that these photos were sent at approximately 11:00 AM.

However, since then, there have been no sightings or communication from Pua. The family carefully examined the pictures he sent and made an intriguing observation: in one of the images, they noticed a faint figure of a man in the background. This discovery led them to speculate that this unknown individual might have been trailing Pua. Numerous unanswered questions linger regarding his disappearance.

Is it possible that the unidentified man is responsible for Daylenn Pua’s fate? Or did Pua encounter a tragic accident while navigating the hazardous trail? Alternatively, could there be another explanation for his mysterious disappearance on that fateful day?

The Search For Missing Daylenn Pua

Extensive search efforts to locate Daylenn Pua have been conducted, involving the fire department, local volunteers, drone operators, and even the U.S. Navy. The search encompassed both land and aerial operations.

On March 3, 2015, two hikers reported hearing cries for help, prompting the fire department to extend their search until the next day. However, the search was officially stopped in the afternoon. Nonetheless, Pua’s family and local volunteers persisted in searching the mountains for any trace of him, as reported by Hawaii News.

Following Daylenn Pua’s disappearance, his sister-in-law created a Facebook group called “Search for Moke Pua” to stay connected with and share updates with individuals involved in the search for him.

The Stairway to Heaven

The Haiku Stairs is a steep steel structure consisting of 3,922 steps. It was originally built to provide access to former U.S. Navy communication facilities in Oahu, Hawaii. This pathway stretches across the Ko’olau mountain range and provides breathtaking views of Kaneohe and Kaneohe Bay.

Starting in 1942, the construction of the Haiku Radio Station was initiated by contractors working for the U.S. Navy. This top-secret facility was designed to transmit radio signals to Navy ships in the Pacific. To achieve the required height for the antennae, the Navy positioned them across the valley and erected a wooden ladder, some remnants of which can still be seen alongside the metal steps. The radio station was officially commissioned in 1943.

After its decommissioning in the 1950s, the Haiku Radio Station was repurposed by the U.S. Coast Guard as an Omega Navigation System station. During the mid-1950s, the original wooden stairs were replaced with metal steps and ramps. However, in 1987, both the station and the trail were officially closed to the public.

The condition of the trail has sparked debate, as the stairs have suffered damage from heavy rainfall and storms. Some people argue that the stairs should be demolished, while others advocate for repairing and reopening them to the public.
